Dance, Eat, Meet, & Compete – Summer Festivals 1)Summer Fun Horseshoe Tournament
The event has become one of the largest horseshoe tournaments in
the country. This year three national champions will throw at the
24 court Marion Davis Park horseshoe court facility. Sign up for

Party in the Pines The
Party in the Pines is a 3-day festival held in Whitmire, S.C. This
is the festival's 22nd year. For three days the Whitmire Jaycees
will close Main Street for fun and frolic for the young and young-at-heart.
The festival attracts thousands of people from surrounding counties
to this small town of less than 2000. One thing that sets this festival
apart from others is that it is strictly an evening event. The Sugarbees
(right) are performing at Party in the Pines this year. When: June 10-12

This delectable event features Newberry's finest cuisines, wine
tasting and live music. Purchase samples from local vendors for

4)Little Mountain Reunion
The Little Mountain Reunion is one of South Carolina’s original
and oldest folk festivals. It began back in 1882 as a reunion for
Newberry College alumni. From live musical performances, games and
carnival rides, and food, the Little Mountain Reunion Festival begins
Friday night will a kickoff event, but the main day is always the
first Saturday in August. When: Friday, August 6 & Saturday, August 7

5)Prosperity’s Hoppin’
The third weekend in August is reserved for Prosperity’s Hoppin’
Festival - fun, music & more in the town formerly known as Frog
Level. Music, food, and games on Friday is followed by activities

Have a sparkly good time! – July 4th in Newberry County 6)4th of July Fireworks at
NHS
Drawing one of the largest crowds of any event in Newberry County,
these fireworks run for around 30 minutes. Preshow often includes
skydiving and music. Fireworks happen just after dark on the 4th
of July. Presented by the Newberry County Law Enforcement Officers

7)Fireworks on Lake Murray Dreher Island Fireworks and Concert
Pack your chairs or blankets and pack a picnic for the Billy Dreher
Island fireworks and concert the Saturday closest to July 4th. Get
there early because the park closes when it reaches capacity. Lake
Murray Symphony Orchestra concert begins at 8pm and the fireworks
from Dreher and Spence Islands begin at dusk (approximately 9:15).
Land lovers visiting the park will be charged $2/adults, $1.25 for
seniors, ages 15 and under are free. You can also view the fireworks
from your boat. Beware, matey – of The ODF (The Occasional Drunken

Swim lessons will be held at the Ann & Frank Smith Aquatic Facility
on Jollystreet Road. Sign up for water aerobics, swim lessons (both

The Mid-Carolina Club
Established in 1968, Mid-Carolina now boasts an expanding membership,
plays host to three local school golf teams (Dutch Fork High School,
Mid-Carolina High School and Newberry College), and maintains its
reputation as a golf course you do not want to miss. Ask about the
pool and food services too. Their Sunday buffet is open to the public

12)Whitmire Golf Course
This municipal course is run by the non-profit Whitmire Golf Association,
which was established in 1939. Enjoy great prices to play this 9-hole
course. Green fees are on an honor system. Check for the green fees

Journey Into the Woods 13)Belfast Plantation
The Belfast Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a 4,664-acre tract
located ten miles northwest of Newberry on Highway 56 near the Kinards
community. The property is situated on the Newberry/ Laurens County
line, with most of the land area in Newberry County. Col. John Simpson
of Belfast, Ireland, settled the land in 1786. The historic Belfast
Plantation house, located in Laurens County, was built by Col. Simpson
in the early 1800's. Apply for fishing and hunting permits. Archery

14)Lynches Woods
This 276-acre woodland area began as a project of the CCC in the
1930's. A 4.7 mile scenic road is complimented by hiking and equestrian
trails. Recent additions to the park include a sheltered picnic
area, restrooms and two primitive campsites. Lynches Woods serves
as the Gateway to the Upstate for the Palmetto Trail. The park is
located behind Piedmont Technical College at the intersection of
Hwy 76 Bypass and Hwy 34 Bypass Where: The entrance is next to Piedmont Tech on Hwy 76

Covering 56,595 acres in Newberry County, the Sumter National Forest
offers something for every outdoor enthusiast. Hunting, fishing,
primitive camping, nature trails, bird-watching, equestrian trails,
picnicking and boating are among the many possibilities of this

Each summer Munson Music in downtown Newberry presents his version

Ride a Horse 17)Camp Horseshoe Camp
Horseshoe activities are centered around the old Dawkins’ home place
built in 1850. Its rustic charm and beauty are enhanced by the garden
and pond. Campers care for and groom our horses and ride them in
our professional show ring. In addition, campers play games and
sports, play archery and hike our 105 acres. Early registration

They board horses. They train horses. They organize and host trail
rides, including a July 4th event. They rent horses for trail rides.

Bear left after passing Little Mountain Elementary School on Mill
Street. The road takes you near enough to the top where a short
walk will provide a great scenic view.

Up – Little Mountain Rocky Branch Natural Area
Rocky Branch Creek Natural Area is a native Piedmont hardwood forest
site of some 44 acres at the eastern base of Little Mountain. With
more than 350 species of flora and fauna at this pristine, mountainous
site, Rudy Mancke, nationally known SC Naturalist, notes that, “Most
Piedmont sites like this have been changed drastically. Thank goodness
you folks have taken care of it and are willing to leave that as
a legacy for people who come after us. To see that diversity . .

LMSC's one week sessions of half day sailing lessons conducted by
a US Sailing certified instructor. Half-day beginning and advanced

Pound the Trail not the Pavement 28)Palmetto Trail
Conceived in 1994, South Carolina’s Palmetto Trail is the state’s
largest bicycle and pedestrian project and will run from the mountains
to the sea. Newberry County has three trailheads for the Palmetto
Trail. They are Lynches Woods, Peak to Prosperity and the Enoree
Passage. Detailed maps and additional information are available
on the Palmetto Conservation’s website. If the Penny Sales Tax passes,
the Prosperity Depot will become an eco-tourism center for Palmetto
Trail and other Palmetto Conservation outdoor activities in the

down the Rivers
Newberry County is bounded in part by the Saluda, Broad, Tyger and
Enoree Rivers. Public landings provide access to these scenic and
historic waterways. Saluda
River:
A public boat ramp is located at Higgin's Bridge just off Hwy 121
south of Silverstreet. Access may also be obtained from the Saluda
River Resort Campground at 1283 Saluda River Road, Silverstreet,
SC 29145, (803) 276-7917.
Broad
River and Parr Reservoir:
In 1914, the Broad River was dammed in order to produce electricity
at Parr Shoals. Access to the river and the reservoir may be obtained
where Heller's Creek and Cannon's Creek cross Broad River Road.
A boat ramp and picnic area are provided at each site. Enoree River:
Sumter National Forest maintains two boat ramps with restrooms on
the Enoree River. One is located at Brazelman's Bridge Road, and
the other is at Keitt's Bridge on Maybinton Road.

your quarters and get some of the freshest milk you will ever drink.
You know the milk is great when a doctor from Irmo is standing in
line behind a punk rock kid with piercings from up the City. You
can’t leave until you thank the ladies (aka moo cows) in the adjacent
field who begin mooing as soon as the vending machine moos. They
also sell their cream and even give tours of the dairy to groups.

Coffee Hour Co-host Sue Summer and Andy Hawkins celebrate June Dairy
Month by doing what we love to do at WKDK – eating!
Thursday, June 24. "Casserole Freestyle." In celebration
of the good food that nurtures church families, local churches enter
their best casseroles with any dairy ingredient. Winning church
receives $100 prize from Henry B. Summer & Co.
Friday, June 25. "Ice Cream Churn-Off," best home-churned
ice-cream contest. Individual winner receives bragging rights and
financial remuneration.
For the Casserole Contest on June 24, churches are asked to nominate
one or more representatives from their congregation to bring a casserole
for judging. Casseroles and recipes must be in the studio by 9 a.m.
Winning church receives $100 prize; winning cook receives $25 and
the admiration of friends and neighbors.
For the Ice-cream Churn-off on June 25, individuals are asked to
bring a pint of their best home-churned ice cream--with recipe--to
radio station WKDK before 9 a.m. for judging. Prizes will be awarded

& Gauntt House
Housed in the historic Coppock House, the Newberry County Museum
is open on the first and third Saturday of each month from 1:00
- 4:00, and will open at other times, upon request, for showings
to groups and/or individuals. There is no admission charge at present,
but donations are accepted. The Museum is located at 1503 Nance
Street, behind the Public Safety Complex. The drive is located off
Cornelia Street. Don’t miss touring Gauntt House – the oldest building
in the City of Newberry – which is also on the site. The Newberry
County Historical & Museum Society also maintains the Bill Ballentine
Farm Museum at the Newberry County Fairgrounds. The farm museum

This small park on Lindsay Street in Newberry was designed in 1930
by the Wells family as a private garden. With two ponds, bridges,
pagodas, lotuses and exotic plants, this park offers a lot of nature
in a small space. The garden is an on-going restoration project
of the Newberry Council of Garden Clubs. It is open daily from 7:00
