Icy May, an 11-year-old chihuahua/maltese mix from the Newberry Animal Shelter, finally found her forever home when her foster mom's family gave her to her foster mom for Christmas. Later in the day, Icy May was so tired from celebrating she returned to the tree, unwrapped for a nap!

Exchange Club Award
Chief Wayne Blount of the Consolidated Fire Department was presented the 2010 Fireman of the Year Award by the Exchange Club of Newberry at the Oct. 5, 2010 joint meeting of the Exchange Club and Newberry County Fireman's Association. The event was held at the Newberry Firehouse Conference Center.

The Newberry County Chamber of Commerce hosted the Ninth Annual Liver Nips Cook-Off at Newberry's Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 2, on Town Square. This year's Cook-Off had five competing teams. Sarah and Larry Shealy (left) of Newberry took home first place honor, and Ann Bowers and Madyson Murphy (right) from Prosperity won second place.

Guest at Shawfest
Helen
Garlington was the guest of honor at Shaw Air Force Base's Shawfest
recently. This was suggested to Shaw officials by Steve Mature (formerly
of Newberry and now of Shaw) and folks at Shaw followed up on it.
Attached are some pictures of Helen, including her on the flightline
talking to the Golden Knight parachute team. She also talked to the
Thunderbird pilots and was introduced over the loudspeaker to the
100,000 people in attendance, according to Ron Mature, who took these
pictures.

Medical Group Welcomes Family Healthcare
Self
Medical Group has welcomed Family Healthcare – Newberry, formerly
known as Newberry Family Health Center, to its network of care. The
family medicine practice, located at 2605 Kinard Street, Suite 200,
in Newberry includes the husband and wife physician team of Michael
Bernardo, MD, and Darly Moore Bernardo, MD. Both are members of the
American Board of Family Practice, and both will continue to serve
on the medical staff of Newberry County Memorial Hospital. The practice
will be adding additional healthcare providers in 2010 to the existing
staff, which includes Shakisha Redmond, Certified Physician Assistant,
and Rebecca M. Rowan, Family Nurse Practitioner.

Certification!
The
Newberry County School District announced 11 teachers who now have
their National Board Certification: Christy Brown, Amy Russell, Jeffrey
Eargle, Candice Lominick, Stacey Templin, Beverly Chapman, Deborah
Moore, Amy Scott, Jennifer Jones, Christy Dyal, and Cindy Kibler.
This brings the districts total to 60 National Board Certified teachers.
